The Department of Mathematics, Physical and Life Sciences (MPLS) in the College of Arts and Sciences designs and delivers undergraduate mathematics, computer science, statistics, physics, biology, environmental science, astronomy, chemistry, and weather courses required by all three Colleges. The Department’s dedicated faculty members have wide-ranging experience not just in education, but also in professional applications in the areas they teach. Additionally, the Department administers the skills assessment that assesses the mathematics competency of incoming students to ensure their success in MPLS coursework.
The MPLS Department offers one bachelor’s degree and two minors. The Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies which can be taken completely online. This flexible degree, designed in response to global corporate leaders, nurtures critical thinkers who understand the connections between science, technology, and humanity. Depending upon their choices, graduates can prepare for careers in aviation, aerospace, international business, communication, or other related professions.
The degree is also designed to accept transfer credits for students who have attended multiple colleges/universities. This offers students a unique opportunity to design a curriculum that serves their needs and aspirations. Furthermore, via the Air University – Associate to Baccalaureate Cooperative (AU-ABC) Category 1 agreement, all CCAF graduates can attain their Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies degree by taking no more than 60 semester hours of additional coursework through Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
The Environmental Science Minor includes the topics of Earth systems, biological diversity, world resources (water, food, energy), global climate change, urban planning, and sustainable development. This minor meets a growing interest of students and employers in environmental responsibility and sustainability.
The Mathematics Minor includes a multitude of topics involving limits, derivatives, integrals, multivariable calculus, first and second order differential equations, Laplace transforms and matrix methods of solutions. The minor supports a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) emphasis highly desired by the aeronautics and technical industries.
