Overview

The Department of Humanities and Communication helps students achieve proficiency in core skills such as communication, critical thinking, cultural literacy, creativity, and collaborative learning.

As an integral part of the general education program, courses in the Department of Humanities and Communication enable students to broaden and deepen their understanding of the highly diverse and rapidly changing society in which they live, including the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The department also offers a Communication major useful in a wide variety of professional contexts, as well as two communication-related and one Humanistic STEM minors.

The department's full-time faculty members are experts in composition, literature, communication, history, humanities, ethics, and world culture. Our faculty deliver courses in these areas to all students in all colleges of Embry-Riddle Worldwide.

The department is developing an Artificial Intelligence and Digital Humanities focus area to investigate social, cultural and ethical questions surrounding artificial intelligence, as well as the practical utilization of artificial intelligence and digital tools at large in research, media creation, and other creative and professional contexts.

Communication Major: Bachelor of Science in Communication

Specialize either in Aviation, Science & Technology Communication or Crisis, Risk & Resilience Communication.

As modern society is increasingly influenced by developments in new media, science and technology, the demand for skilled communicators continues to grow, with higher than average job growth for communication roles between 2020 and 2030. Embry Riddle’s unique Bachelor of Science in Communication (COMD) program equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a variety of communication-related careers, from public relations to technical writing to crisis communication.

Our STEM-designated Communication Major (CIP code 09.0702: Digital Communication and Media/Multimedia) trains students to hone their communication skills; to practice gathering, analyzing and disseminating information to a variety of audiences; to represent information through effective written, verbal, nonverbal, visual and digital communication; and to integrate knowledge with practice in communication. Students explore communication in areas such as media literacy, public relations, law, visual design and more!

Students specialize in one of two areas: Aviation, Science & Technology Communication or Crisis, Risk & Resilience Communication. Students also have the opportunity to minor in another field of study, such as International Relations, Marketing or Project Management, to tailor their degree to their interests and career goals.

The program culminates in either a Senior Project or an Internship, giving students the ability to apply their communication knowledge and skills in a real-world setting.

Minor in Communication

Our Communication Minor offers a distinctive program designed for students eager to seamlessly merge science and technology with robust communication skills.

Providing a strong foundation in modern communication concepts, hands-on experience, and exploration of new media, the minor equips students to navigate the dynamic intersection of technology, science and effective communication.

Our Crisis, Risk and Resilience Communication Minor is a unique course of study that answers the demand for those who wish to explore the intersections between communication and safe and secure societies and industries. Students gain a strong foundation in communication for risk management, crisis response and fostering resilience in multidisciplinary contexts and vis-à-vis diverse audiences; effectively communicating across the phases of the national preparedness cycle; knowledge of important historical, legal and policy foundations of communication challenges; and approaches in an all-hazards and whole-community context of civil security.

Minor in Humanistic STEM

The Humanistic STEM minor provides opportunities to enhance critical thinking skills, improve communication expertise and develop an interdisciplinary mindset.

The interdisciplinarity across the meta-disciplines of Humanities and STEM demonstrates to employers that students can think beyond academic silos, using a variety of perspectives in creative problem-solving.
