Dean of Academic Affairs at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Worldwide’s Central Region, Dr. Mark Friend, is a newly appointed member to the 2012 Board of Directors for the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP).  The Champaign, IL-based nonprofit organization is recognized as the leader in high-quality credentialing for safety, health, and environmental practitioners.

The BCSP sets the standard for professional excellence in the field of safety—particularly in the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credentialing procedure.  Through the processes of background verification and examination, the procedure helps ensure that individuals who are qualified as CSPs have the appropriate education, professional experience, and knowledge to help maintain safe and healthful workplace environments.  In almost 45 years of existence, BCSP has helped certify over 30,000 safety professionals.

Dr. Friend is an active participant in the field of safety management both in the United States and abroad. For over 35 years Dr. Friend’s outstanding list of accomplishments as a professor, author, consultant, and public speaker has earned him honors, grants, and contracts from academic institutions and professional organizations.

“The field of occupational safety is dynamic and continually evolving,” says Dr. Friend.  “Due to constant movements in the field of safety, the Board must perform ongoing monitoring of the profession and ensure that its credentialing process is current and abreast of significant changes.  I would like to see the Board continue to maintain close contact with the field and reflect important changes in its processes.”

Tom Adams, Executive Director of BCSP, states, “Dr. Friend was chosen from 25 very distinguished professionals who bring the most comprehensive expertise in the safety profession to the BCSP Board of Directors. We are very honored he accepted the appointment.”

“I am proud to join of a team of experts that has consistently exceeded expectations,” Dr. Friend remarks. “I intend to provide support in the evolution and improvement of professional standards and the examination process.”

The officers of the 2012 BCSP board include Board President Carl Heinlein of American Contractors Insurance Group; Board Vice President Rixio Medina of Rixio Medina and Associates, L.P.; and Board Treasurer David West of Science Applications International Corp.
