Savannah, GA September 4, 2009 – The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Worldwide Campus in Savannah in collaboration with the Southern Wings Chapter of Women in Aviation International is sponsoring a unique event at the Savannah Jazz Festival. The paper airplane making contest was established to crown the best designer of paper airplanes between the ages of 0 to 16.

The airplane design contest will take place during this year’s Youth Jazz Festival at the Savannah Jazz Festival on September 27, 2009 starting at 2:30 p.m. The contest will be broken down into four age groups: 0 to 3, 4 to 7, 8 to 11, and 12 to 16 years of age. Embry-Riddle and the Women in Aviation’s Southern Wings Chapter brainstormed together to create an idea that would entice attendees of the Savannah Jazz Festival to participate in the Youth Jazz Festival, as well as sharing in their joint admiration, appreciation and commitment toward the aviation and aerospace field.

Southern Wings is a chapter of Women in Aviation International established for women who are currently involved in aviation or aerospace, or are interested in any aspect of flight. The Southern Wings chapter began in large part due to the efforts of an energetic, forward-thinking group of women employed at the Savannah, GA., headquarters of Gulfstream Aerospace. They were soon joined by other women in the area who worked in various aviation or aerospace businesses, as well as those who are interested in becoming involved in some aspect of flight. The group is comprised of intelligent, energetic and talented members: an Embry-Riddle administrator and faculty members, several owners of aviation businesses, Gulfstream administrative team members, highly talented aircraft assembly specialists, flight instructors, and pilots.
